We are frequently asked about the reasons for the existence of the 1888 Message Study Committee—

Who are we?

What do we teach?

Why do we exist?

Who Are We?

The 1888 Message Study Committee is not an "independent ministry," but is widely recognized as a loyal, supportive ministry of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. It functions within the parameters of the organized church, fully cooperating with church leadership in every way possible. This Committee does not accept tithe. Members of the 1888 Message Study Committee include ordained ministers, professional persons, and lay members who share a common conviction.

We see in the 1888 message of Christ's righteousness what Ellen White saw when she proclaimed it a "most precious message" of glorious Good News that must go to the whole world. We see how this Good News faithfully recovers and revitalizes the third angel's message as "the everlasting gospel" that grips people's hearts. We see that the 1888 message recovers the true Bible idea of justification by faith and relates it to the unique Seventh-day Adventist truth of the cleansing of the heavenly sanctuary. We see why Ellen White enthusiastically endorsed the 1888 message as being the initial "showers of the latter rain" and "the third angel’s message in verity." [top of page]

What Is the Fruit of the Message?

Those whose hearts respond to this "most precious message" of Good News are confirmed and strengthened in their loyalty and support of the church organization. They will understand that it is the Lord's will that repentance, revival, and reformation shall permeate the organized church body. They dedicate their lives to cooperate with the Holy Spirit to this end, so that an enlightened and unified church will be prepared to cooperate with Heaven in a final work of much more abounding grace for the entire world.

The members of this Study Committee have found that this message has been a tremendous spiritual uplift to them personally and they are happy to share the blessing with others. [top of page]

Our Beginnings

The Committee had its beginnings in 1985 at Camp Mohaven in the Ohio Conference. Helen Cate, a retired General Conference employee had for many years loved the 1888 message. She invited friends to come for a week of meetings to study it first-hand. The approximately 125 people who attended were enthusiastic; they requested that a newsletter be printed, and that another conference be held the following year.

Since then, national and regional conferences have been held every year at various Seventh-day Adventist educational institutions such as Andrews University, Union College, Southern College, Oakwood College, Columbia Union College, La Sierra University, Pacific Union College, and others. The first "international" conference was held in July 2000 at Kingsway College, Oshawa, Ontario, Canada. In addition to major conferences, weeks of prayer and seminars have been conducted in hundreds of our churches around the world.

Why Does the Committee Continue to Exist?

Evangelism is the real objective of the 1888 Message Study Committee. When the church experiences repentance and reconciliation with Christ, vast numbers of honest hearts in what the Bible calls "Babylon," will respond to the heart warming appeal of Christ and His righteousness. The earth will be lightened with the message and a people will be prepared for the second coming of Christ.

The pure gospel is the power of God unto salvation. Christ is revealed as a Saviour "nigh at hand" and "not afar off." Hope for the future and solid joy in the Lord flow out of this revived interest in the message that thrilled the heart of Ellen White more than a century ago. You are invited to investigate for yourself.
